Activities for All Alone in the Universe
Sixth graders at Horace Mann Elementary kept sketch journals, simple journals of 8-1/2 x 11” paper folded in half and staple, while listing to All Alone in the Universe. One of the teachers shared with me the journal of a student who had found writing difficult, but was able to respond to what he was hearing through drawing.
“Books are ideas with meat on their bones.” I have that written down but I don’t know who said it. It might have been me, but probably not.
A “writing” assignment:
1. Write a metaphor or a simile. Maybe one that starts off with, “Life is….” Or “My life is like…” or “The world is like…” Or “Love is like….”Something big. Have students do this before you tell them what step #2is.
2. Make it concrete, real.
